If your dryer is running full cycles but clothes still come out damp — or damp and hot, which is a special kind of frustrating — something isn't working right. Here's how to figure out what's actually going on.

The Most Common Reasons

Clogged Lint Trap or Exhaust Vent

This is the most common cause by far. The lint trap catches most of the debris, but lint also builds up in the vent duct that runs from your dryer to the outside of your home. A partially blocked vent restricts airflow — which means heat builds up, the dryer shuts off early via thermal protection, and clothes come out damp.

Check: Pull the dryer away from the wall, disconnect the duct, and look inside. If it's packed with lint, that's your answer. A professional duct cleaning every 1–2 years is strongly recommended.

Weak or Failed Heating Element

Electric dryers use a heating element that can burn out over time — often partially. A partially failed element still produces some heat, so the dryer runs warm but doesn't fully dry. Gas dryers use a gas valve and igniter, either of which can fail or weaken.

💡 If your dryer runs but produces no heat at all, a failed heating element or igniter is the most likely cause.

Faulty Thermostat or Thermal Fuse

Your dryer uses thermostats to regulate temperature and a thermal fuse as a safety shutoff. If the cycling thermostat fails, the dryer may not heat consistently. If the thermal fuse has blown (often due to a previous vent blockage), the dryer may produce no heat at all.

Overloaded Drum

This one's simple: too many clothes. Overloading prevents clothes from tumbling freely, which means they don't dry evenly. Try a smaller load and see if the issue resolves itself.

Worn or Broken Belt

If the drum doesn't turn, clothes don't dry — even if the dryer heats. A broken drum belt is a common failure on older machines and is a relatively straightforward fix.

When to Call a Technician

If cleaning the lint trap and vent doesn't solve the problem, it's time to call. Thermostat and heating element replacement are standard repairs that usually take under an hour and cost far less than a new dryer. We service all major brands throughout Fresno and Clovis.
